Project Overview

Together in Safety is a global maritime coalition focused on reducing incidents and improving safety culture across the shipping industry. They approached us to redesign their digital presence so that critical safety knowledge could be shared more effectively across fleets, crew and organisations around the world. The original site was text-heavy, difficult to navigate and not designed for the realities of shipboard connectivity.

We partnered with the coalition over several years to rework the platform from the ground up, simplifying content, improving accessibility and creating a faster, clearer and more usable experience for all seafarers.

Understanding the needs of seafarers

Our work began with research across the maritime sector, including interviews with ten seafarers to understand real-world pain points, connectivity issues and the moments when safety guidance is most needed. We audited the original content, mapped the resource landscape and built a structure that made sense for people accessing the site in challenging conditions.

This thinking informed a clearer flow, including a “get started in three steps” path, feedback loops and more intuitive groupings around leadership, incident prevention and wellbeing.

Designing a resource platform that works everywhere

The first release modernised the site and made the growing resource library far easier to use. Usage soon confirmed its importance: the resource library became the most visited section, and documents like the Golden Safety Rules emerged as the most frequently downloaded content globally.

We refined every aspect of the experience to support low-bandwidth environments, reduce cognitive load and help people find the right materials fast.

A faster, safer and more accessible new website

In the latest iteration of the platform, we rebuilt the experience with industry-leading accessibility, improved performance and vastly reduced technical complexity. Lighthouse scores show a major leap across accessibility, best practices and SEO, a result of reducing plugin conflict and moving to a cleaner, more stable foundation.

The new system ensures that anyone, anywhere, can quickly access essential safety information, even in difficult environments.

A platform that encourages participation

The new design encourages more active contribution across the global community. Case studies, safety stories and updates are easier to share, and improved publishing workflows allow updates to go live in minutes. Better social integration and category design mean fresh, relevant content reaches the right people more quickly.

This shift has turned the website into a more collaborative, living safety platform.

Responding to a changing world

The redesign also improves visibility for the Golden Safety Rules, ensuring they remain prominent no matter where users are on the site. Features like one-click newsletter signup help critical updates reach crews instantly, while faster campaign tools allow the coalition to respond to emerging risks in real time. All of this supports Together in Safety’s mission of improving safety outcomes across the industry.
